Iron Cove update

We followed the Iron Cove Creek from Parramatta Rd at Ashfield to Iron Cove.   The walk along Hawthorne Canal passes Hawthorne light rail stop and a dog of the leash area with a dog-focused Cafe 'Bones'

Hawthorne Canal

The canal is 'of particular historical significance as one of the first nine purpose built storm water drains constructed in Sydney in the 1890's. The then Minister for Public Works, the Hon. Bruce Smith, MLA., appalled at the extremely unhealthy conditions prevailing at the time, proposed a separate system of storm water drains be built to help alleviate the problem.' Reference

(below) A new pedestrian and cycle bridge over Iron Cove Creek Canal, near Timbrell and Robson Parks on the Bay Run, was officially opened in October last year. The 30m long, 4.5m wide cable bridge was considered a vital safety link for the thousands of pedestrians, joggers and cyclists who use the Bay Run every day.  

The bridge features an artwork installation at the top.
The project was jointly undertaken by Ashfield Council and Canada Bay Council with funding from the NSW Road and Maritime Services.

Iron Cove 'Bay Run'

'Our Excursions' visited part of 'The Bay Run' in 2010 to photograph Callan Park.  Recently I returned to Lillyfield to meet up with a long time friend, to walk around Iron Cove.     Location map

Iron Cove Run - King George Park

This pleasant 7.2 Km run/walk and cycleway that follows the foreshore around the cove, is mostly flat, apart from the incline up to cross the bridge.

Iron Cove Bridge

The current steel truss bridge replaced an earlier wrought iron bridge build shortly after WW2.

Work on the duplication of the Iron Cove Bridge (see left) was completed in January 2011. It's on the western side, has three traffic lanes and a nice wide walkway/cycle path.

Along the walk are signs giving information about Mangroves, Saltmarsh etc found in the intertidal zone around the cove.

We started and finished our walk from the Leichhardt North Light Rail stop, and stopped off at a cafe for lunch. There is also a Club at Habberfield (above)

Callan Park - Lilyfield (1)

The 100acre plus 'Callan Park' property was purchased by the Colonial Government in 1873 for construction of a Hospital for the Insane, to be designed according to the enlightened views of the American Dr Thomas Kirkbride. It received its first patients in October 1884.

The colonial architect James Barnet chose the Callan Park site for the new hospital as it was exposed to winter sun and summer breezes, was close to the city, and was isolated by the nature of its boundaries. 
The site also had a long north-facing frontage to Iron Cove. 

Iron Cove Bridge from Callan Point

In 1976 Callan Park Hospital was amalgamated with the adjoining Broughton Hall Psychiatric Clinic and become known as the Rozelle Hospital. In April 2008 the hospital was closed and staff and patients were transferred to a mental facility at Concord Hospital. 

Leichhardt Council recently released a draft master plan for Callan Park, on which people were invited to comment.

A plaque says this War Memorial (near Callan Park Oval), was erected by patients of B Ward.
It appears to cover a well.
